Students work together to design a house that will stand up against strong winds. As a part of our STEM/Science curriculum about Weather and Climate, third grade students study extreme weather and how it affects both the natural world and their lives. After learning how severe weather, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, can affect buildings, we decided to work on how to better design a house to stand up against strong winds using resources provided by Mystery Science. With careful collaboration and problem solving with partners, many students were able to find ways to help strengthen the design of their house using only 4 paper clips, 6 toothpicks, a sheet of paper, and 2 stickers. Doing this project helped us to better understand what engineers do to help buildings withstand the force of nature.
